  • Helping Your Teen Prepare for Social Situations

As teens get older, they’re often expected to step into more social situations at school, work, volunteering, church, sports, and everyday life. For a teen with social anxiety, these moments can feel overwhelming. They may want to participate, make friends, or become more independent, but their fear or worry can make even simple interactions feel hard.

How to Know If Your Teen Is Struggling With Social Anxiety

Social anxiety doesn’t always look obvious. Some teens may tell you they feel nervous, embarrassed, judged, or afraid of saying the wrong thing. Others may not have the words for it. Instead, you may notice that your teen avoids social plans, feels sick before events, asks to stay home, struggles to order food or speak to adults, worries for days before a presentation, or seems exhausted after being around people.

They may also become irritable, shut down, overthink conversations, avoid eye contact, or rely on you to speak for them. These behaviors don’t mean your teen is being difficult. They may be trying to manage anxiety the best way they know how.

How Parents Can Help at Home

You can support your teen by staying calm, curious, and patient. Try asking gentle questions like, “What feels hardest about this?” or “What would help you feel more prepared?”

It can also help to talk through what to expect, practice small conversation starters, plan ahead for stressful moments, and celebrate small steps.

The goal is not to push your teen into everything at once. It is to help them build confidence over time. Small steps—like saying hello, attending part of an event, asking a question, or trying one new activity—can help.

    When Counseling Can Help

Therapy can help teens understand their anxiety, challenge anxious thoughts, build coping skills, and practice tools they can use in real-life situations. With support, your teen can begin to feel more prepared, capable, and confident as they grow.
